What Is Included in the Free Program?

This program uses a mix of indoor, outdoor, and flexible activities. Children can participate even when they cannot visit Pictured Rocks on Lake Superior. The official page encourages children to do their best independently while allowing a parent, grandparent, scout leader, or another adult to help.

Instead of requiring everyone to complete the same number of assignments, the park uses age-based minimums. Children ages 5 to 7 complete at least two activities, ages 8 to 10 complete at least three, and ages 11 and older complete at least four.

What Children Can Learn and Do

  • Park Symbols: Draw a personal symbol representing natural or cultural things worth protecting. The park supplies a printable shape but says a blank sheet of paper can work without a printer.
  • Pictured ROCKS!: Use the before-and-after images of Miners Castle to observe how wind, rain, snow, ice, weathering, and erosion change the shoreline over time, then imagine the future landscape.
  • Native People of the Lakeshore: Read the Ojibwa stories presented by the park and create an original story inspired by a natural area close to home.
  • Stretching Your Senses: Observe the surroundings using sight, hearing, smell, and touch and record features of a nearby outdoor place.
  • Nature’s Notes: Sit in a quiet outdoor place for about 5–15 minutes and write a three-line nature haiku.
  • Web Detectives: Explore park information to learn about wildlife, Lake Superior, people who lived in the area, and ways visitors can protect natural spaces.

How to Complete the Activities

  1. Open the virtual Junior Ranger article and review the six activities.
  2. Choose the required number of activities based on age. Some can be done indoors; others involve looking closely at a nearby outdoor space.
  3. Complete drawings or written responses on paper as directed. An adult reviews and approves the completed activities.
  4. Scroll to the pledge and badge section, follow the ranger’s pledge instructions, then download the virtual badge and certificate.

Eligibility, Rewards and Important Details

The badge and certificate are downloadable and printable, not guaranteed mailed items. Most activities can be completed with common paper and writing supplies.

Some choices ask participants to go outdoors in their neighborhood or local park. Families can choose the permitted set of activities that works for their situation.

Review the official program page before starting for the most current activity links, instructions, and badge details. These are educational resources, not a guaranteed mailed freebie.
