What Is Included in the Free Program?
The activity program explores both the natural landscape and the historical significance of Valley Forge, where George Washington and the Continental Army spent a six-month winter encampment. The park’s introductory ranger video explains what the virtual experience covers and offers captions, transcript, and audio description.
The park groups activities into three parts, so children can encounter several different types of learning without needing to visit Pennsylvania. Each part contains two activities. Younger children may choose one from each part, while older children complete both on each page.
What Children Can Learn and Do
- Nature: Birds, Beaks, and Habitat asks participants to think about how birds live in their environments. Know Your Trees focuses on identifying and understanding the park’s trees.
- The Valley Forge Encampment: Sentry Duty at Valley Forge and Practice Your Drills introduce duties and experiences associated with military life during the encampment.
- Keeping History Alive: The Arrowhead Emblem and Valley Forge Scavenger Hunt focus on why parks preserve history and how visitors can identify meaningful features.
How to Complete the Activities
- Open the official Virtual Junior Ranger page, watch the optional welcome video, and choose Part One: Nature.
- Work through one activity on each of the three pages if the child is age 9 or younger. If age 10 or older, complete both activities on each page for six total.
- Use paper and a pen or pencil to record responses while working through the web activities.
- After completing the required activities, follow the park’s Junior Ranger pledge page to access the virtual badge download.
